John Haesemeyer

Haesemeyer (HAZE-mire) is an SF-based performing artist who fuses folk and pop genres, emphasizing intimate vocals, acoustic instruments, and the rhythm section of a rock band.

Growing up in the Midwest in the 80s and 90s, Haesemeyer found sanctuary in the singer-songwriters who came before him.  Their music gave him a way to reflect on all that was happening around him:  his parents’ alcoholism and divorce, the closets that confined him, and the ordinary changes of adolescence.

In making music, Haesemeyer's goal is to create a similar experience for listeners - exploring the themes of loss, love, and hope that are common to the human condition.   Though he explores a variety of subjects and sounds in his music, these themes seldom vary.

In 2012, Haesemeyer quit his job in San Francisco to pursue music full-time.  He released his debut studio record in 2013, drawing on a catalog of more than 50 songs that he had written and recorded in various stages of his life. 

The album, Come Along Quickly, was recorded in Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, where many of Haesemeyer's favorite artists recorded their hits.  For example, Neil Young and CSNY recorded the legendary album, Deja Vu, in the same rooms where Come Along Quickly was recorded.  Haesemeyer, and his Argentinian producer, Nahuel Bronzini (SF Conservatory of Music) thoughtfully arranged the album.  The result is a fully textured album featuring 15 different rock and orchestral instruments, back-up singers, and a hip hop artist on one of the tracks.

Haesemeyer is currently performing in California with his six-piece band, making music videos, and working on his sophomore record.

November 18, 2013. SF-based folk-rock artist, Haesemeyer, announced today the release of his new album, Come Along Quickly, to a broad array of internet radio stations, blogs, and other online music providers, in conjunction with the Los Angeles artist development firm, Recording Artist Guild. Recent reviews have recognized the album for its lyrical content and musical quality.

 Writes Music Emissions, “Haesemeyer is a story-teller. His lyrical style is in the truest vein of the singer/songwriter genre. The mood on Come Along Quickly ranges from melancholy to a drive-on-the-open-road type of vibe. These songs are deep, both musically and lyrically.” MuzikNotez Magazine recommends, “LIsten to ‘Colors in Between’ [one of the tracks on the album] and you will get a real feel for the honest emotion with which Haesemeyer writes.” Remarking on the same track, Soundscape Magazine writes, “Haesemeyer convinces the listener with very thoughtful lyrics, a handful of instruments such as the piano and an acoustic guitar, and his very pleasant voice.”

 While the songs are unified by Haesemeyer’s voice and storytelling, each track has its own sound. “We drew on songs written during various stages of my life so musically each song has its own space,” Haesemeyer explains. “My producer (Nahuel Bronzini, Argentina) and I also put a lot time into the arrangements before we hit the studio, so you’ll hear everything from string quartets to saxophones to hip hop beats on this album,” Haesemeyer smiles. The 2013 album features 15 rock and orchestral instruments, jazz singers, and a rap artist.

 The record was recorded at San Francisco's legendary Hyde Street Studios where many famous folk-rock artists of the 1970s recorded their hits, including Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, and CSNY. Orchestral parts were tracked at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Polygamy in Utah Decriminalized by Federal Court

The U.S. District Court, District of Utah, Central Division has ruled that plural marriages do not constitute a crime. While this does not open the door immediately to plural marriage licenses or other rights, it does one thing – families that practice polygamy may not be persecuted by the state as criminals.

The case, brought by the former Utah family of Cody Brown and his 4 wives, who had to flee Utah to escape state persecution, was represented by Jonathan Turley as its lead counsel. Turley wrote on his blog that U.S. District Court Judge Clarke Waddoups had struck down key portions of the Utah polygamy law as unconstitutional.

Turley observed, “With this decision, families like the Browns can now be both plural and legal in the state of Utah. The Court struck down the provision as violating both the free exercise clause of the First Amendment as well as the due process clause. The court specifically struck down language criminalizing cohabitation – the provision that is used to prosecute polygamists.”

Observing that the law had been challenged dozens of times in state and federal courts over many decades, Turley praised Judge Waddoups and said, “It took singular courage to be the first court not only in this country but any recorded decision to strike down the criminalization of polygamy.”

In its decision, the court struck down the part of the statute that criminalizes co-habitation between consenting adults. The effect of the decision would also limit future prosecutions of traditional bigamy in cases where individuals have multiple marriage licenses.

Of course, this throws open a door of thousands of other issues like inheritance, and rights of wives and their children, but as the case makes clear – criminalization of polygamy also did not serve to address those more important issues, but served to suppress them.

Skrillex meets Garbage with a splash of Queen -The Opponent is the the sophomore release from Brooklyn recording artist Evan Russell Saffer (aka ERS) follow up to 2010’s rock opera Neon Gas.  The Opponent fuses his high voltage rock, integrating electronics and dance beats – 5 tracks of massive dub electro dance metal.  Saffer’s signature melodic songwriting, monstrous hooks and searing vocal work (including spoken word) are all there along with rave-esque dance beats and mesmerizing guitar work.
