Sega music culture - Workshop and Stages Proposal from Yoan Catherine

My name is Yoan Catherine, and I am a guitarist, singer, and composer from Mauritius Island. I am reaching out to you today to share a proposal for workshops and masterclasses focused on our unique and vibrant Sega music culture.

As you may know, Sega music originated among the slave populations of Mauritius and Réunion Island and later spread throughout Seychelles Island. It is a fusion of African or Malagasy music with European music, including folk dance music like polka, waltz, and quadrilles. Until the Mauritian Ti Frère became popular in the 1960s, Sega was only played in private places. It is now considered the national music of Mauritius and is popular across several other islands.

I have extensive experience in composing, performing, and promoting Sega music. I was one of the founders of the mulaeo band on Mauritius Island, and I released my first album called "Dime nwa gete" in 2013, which is now very well-known in the Mauritius island community and throughout all Mauritian Diaspora Community present around the world.

Recently, I collaborated with Uruk, who has over 25 years of experience in original and authentic world music creation, to explore the different aspects of music fundamentals.

He introduced me to his research on world music, especially about how our traditional Sega encompasses a wide range of unknown genres.

Together with Olivier Degrace and Fabien Ramalinga, we are open and free to share our music culture in workshops and masterclasses if we got the chance to perform on any live stages dedicated to world music.

I would like to invite you to check out my social media links and video clips to get a better sense of my work. I would be more than happy to provide further information or discuss this proposal in more detail.

Please feel free to contact me via email or phone if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Best regards,
Yoan Catherine
